Tweet! Tweet! October 2012

I'm not sure if Twitter is going to keep all my tweets forever and ever. Because they are often little snippets about my very glamorous and exciting daily life (and aren't good enough stories to make a blog post) with my family, I will preserve them on this blog monthly.

Uncommon praise

I've written on my blog, many times, how parenting is the hardest thing I've ever done. Well, it still is, and may always will be.

Just like my girls, I'm a work in progress. I make mistakes, I struggle, I love, I shout, I hug, I kiss, I get frustrated, I am easily annoyed, I praise, I sigh, I am amazed by my daughters talents, brains, bodies, and aspirations. I'm in awe of their futures. I am not a perfect mother, and am pretty damn sure that nobody is.

It's so easy to observe from the outside and make judgments about what you see, and twice last week two different people said to me, "your life looks so perfect."    I simply do the best I can everyday, and some days I'm pretty damn good and other days I fail.  There is no perfection.

One of the hardest parts of parenting girls...young girls? that everything we do is simply expected.  We cook, clean, drive, make lunches, plan, organize, work, support, attend....I'll spare you from the rest of my list.

We get hardly any praise for our efforts (unlike my work or past school environments) and there are no daily grades, yet, I still try to grade myself.  I occasionally get a "Thanks, mom" and loves and snuggles are still free and readily available (especially from Madison) for now.

Yet, I push them to rely on me less and less, and urge them take on more age appropriate tasks and activities.  "You're X age now, and can do that yourself."  I get frustrated when they revert back to an old behavior instead of recognizing in the moment that they simply need more of me than I'm giving.  My job is to push them out of my nest everyday so they can learn to fly on their own.  These pushes are painful for all of us, and the contradictions are endless.

So, when praise does come, in this case a form of a card from Madison, it's so rewarding.  The funny thing is I don't even know when (or about what) this was written:

Dear Mom,
You are such a great mom.  You do a lot of great things. I love you very very very much.  I do not want another mother.  Now here are some things I need to tell you.  You are very nice.  You pack my lunch everyday.  You pack me with love.  I had so much fun today.  We love you so much.  If their was a competition on who is the best mom.  You deserve the most points.  You should win first place.  Everyone likes you.  You are the best.  Last night when you were helping Brooke, it felt like you were the best mom ever.  XOXO.

Thank you, Maddie. I'll take it! I love you too.

Snaggle tooth no more!

Brooke lost her SIXTH tooth today at school!

Snaggle tooth

This tooth has been  hanging sideways for the last 2 weeks. I try to wiggle it or make it fall out anyway I can.

To be honest, it's a little bit embarrassing to take her out in public with that tooth!

I'm about to tie a string to a door knob!

A trip to Six Flags

Zak wanted to spend his entire Sunday watching football, so the girls and I decided to go to Six Flags without him!  The weather was perfect....about 55 degrees and cloudy.  That's just cold enough to scare off the crowds and wear a light jacket.  We rode TONS of rides, and many of them twice!

It was chilly, but it wasn't cold enough to NOT ride the Log Ride.  We got a little bit wet which made for a few minutes of cold when the wind picked up, but nothing we couldn't deal with.  They enjoyed it so much, they went again:

It is "Fright Fest," so all the scary guys were roaming around. This guy, who is about 10 feet tall was especially creepy, but Maddie wanted to take her picture with him.  Brooke, who didn't want to be near him, took this photo:

Also, see that ride in the background?  The Boomerang.  Maddie and I rode that last year (sorta on accident), and it's her current claim to fame even though she'll likely NEVER ride it again.

Tea cups are more her style.

Then, Brooke took Maddie for a little drive, and I had a flash-forward of what their life may look like in 10 years.  "Check ya later, mom! We are going OUT!"

These sweet guys gave the girls a bag of candy, and totally made them fall in love with Six Flags again (after our disastrous Water Park Adventure this summer. Ew.)

Playin' in the Rain

We've had some awesome rain in the last few weeks, and the girls wanted to play outside in it.

So, we let them.

Sadly it hasn't yet been enough rain to fill up the sad and empty lake, but the girls don't care. (In the picture above, everywhere you see green grass--right up to the dark green line of trees--is SUPPOSED to be water. It's about 70 feet down, STILL.)

They played outside for about an hour, then came in dried off, changed clothes, then asked to go out again.

Sure thing!  You're only 5 and 7 years old once in your life. YOLO!
