The beach sucked the energy out of us

We are on our way home from South Padre Island. What is it about playing on the beach that is so exhausting? Maddie is wiped out.

In other news, Brooke has renamed her vulva--Vagina Cheeks. As in, "Mom, I have sand in my vagina cheeks."

(Zak and I giggled like 12 year olds.)

A love note to me?

I'm not sure what this says, but it is about me and I think it's sweet.

I found it in Maddie's pile of end of the year school work.

Growing Up Celebration--Brooke 2011

Brooke has graduated, (from nothing!) and we had a Celebration at her school to prove it. Every year, the kids who attend the child care center, put on a performance for the parents showing off their singin' and dancin' skilz.

This year, Brooke "graduates" from the Pre-K3 program to the Pre-K4 program. You know what they say about the Pre-K4 program? That she'll be in Kindergarten in 2012 (omg!), then the next year, she'll graduate from high school and we'll be empty nesters (yea!).

Brooke is getting ready to sing, sitting with her friends and teacher:

This is Brooke's class performing with the Pre-K4 class (aka "the big kids" who will start Kinder in the fall):

These are all the kids who performed in the Grand Finale. (I imagine producing this show is a lot like hearding cats.)

(I know! My camera is so awesome! Email me, and I tell you how you can get your very own Blurry Photos Only Camera!)

At the end of the show, they do this terrible thing to the parents...a slide show where a baby picture appears next to the "graduation" picture. Totally makes everyone cry. Here is Brooke on the big screen:

The only reason the kids put up with these shenigans is for the bribes they're promised after the performance.

COOKIES!

Brooke will do anything for a cookie (except eat broccoli).

Our first 5k

I've never ran in a 5K before. In fact, even though I exercise quite a bit, I'm not really a runner. (I've always blamed it on the boobs).

Zak forwarded me an email from work on Friday, and asked me if I wanted to participate in his company's first ever 5K. Since I'm also participating in the Global Corporate Challenge for the next 16 weeks through my employer, I HAD to say yes. Because Zak gave me less than 12 hours notice, I wasn't able to "train" for the 5K. (Later I discovered, that to real runners a 5K is just a warm up, and requires ZERO training.)

The event, like most 5K's, was a fundraiser for a charity that Zak's employer supports. I am always looking for age appropriate charity work for the kids to participate in, and this seemed like a perfect match. So, instead of putting the kids in the "Children's Play Area" so Zak and I could run alone, Zak came up with the idea to have the race with us on their scooters.

The course was three laps around the building where Zak works, and there were some small uphills and downhills to contend with. As it turns out, the biggest obstacle were the two humans that I gave birth to (shocking, I know!).

Before the 8:00 am race time, the Girls were just so excited to be there on their scooters, that they used up much of their energy "warming up." You can tell from the picture above that we were the first people to arrive. When the horn was sounded, we were joined by a ton of 25-29 year old ringers just 150 others who quickly blew past us.

As everyone burst ahead, Brooke got a little scared, and Maddie said, "What? This is weird. I don't get it." They spent the first lap asking all sorts of random questions and begging us to "wait for them" even though the Girls clearly had the advantage with their scooters.

After much encouragement, and warnings that whiners can't race with the grown-ups, they warmed up to the race. Sort of:

(by the time Brooke asked Zak for a piggy back ride, and I was carrying her scooter, we were lapped)

Brooke pooped out after the first of three laps, and I dropped her off in the kiddie corral where they had games and much anticipated snacks.

Maddie wanted to keep going, so she and I went another lap around the building while Zak ran ahead. As we were getting ready to begin the third and final lap, Maddie decided to join Brooke and the other kids.

I ran the last lap alone, and finished in 46 minutes. I think my time totally doesn't count because I stopped to drop off the kids (twice!) and had to take a pee break. Surprisingly, I didn't finish last! However, the winner for the women's group completed in 23 minutes (half of my time). I guess I better get a better sports bra and start training for next year.

Monkey Around

We had another family join us at the Lake House this past weekend. The G's came on Saturday afternoon, hung out all day, roasted marshmallows at night, and Maddie and Brooke had their first slumber party!

(Sadly I didn't get a good picture of our friends, Alan and Liberty.)

Madison used to be in Pre-K with Isabella (now they are Kindergartners at different schools, and Isabella is also in a Dual Lanugage program). Ella puede hablar espanol tambien (just totally had to google that phrase!):

Brooke is currently in pre-school with Mateo (who may be the most handsome & sweetest boy in the world and Brooke's future husband--according to her):

The kids had so much fun playing together (and got a long so well) that we hardly heard a peep from them. This allowed me to show off my favorite Lake House pastime... drinking vodka Doing Nothing.

Here are some pics of the fun we had swimming. The kids swam in the lake too! (Sadly, I forgot to take my camera down to the lake):

Ever since seeing Cirque du Soleil, Maddie thinks she's in training to be an acrobat. Instead of sitting in this swing chair properly, she now climbs it, spins it, and hangs upside down.

Her mother must be a monkey.

Or maybe her father's a monkey:

Sisters & Shiner

Brooke got into playground collision today with a friend and got a bruised eye/cheek.

When Maddie heard about it, she was very worried. Maddie volunteered to "do all the work," and take care of Brooke tonight. She started out by escorting her out of the school building.

Edited to add: 4 days later--the black eye looks worse everyday, but Brooke doesn't seem to mind. She only gets mad when it's insinuated that she got into a fight. "It was an accident! Corrine and I just bumped heads!"

Happy Mother's Day 2011

Zak's mother's day was filled with three mothers and two girls. He had his hands full! My Mom (Nina--in black) and Zak's Mom (Grandma--in white pants) were in town.

Zak took us to an awesome brunch, where were proceeded to gorge ourselves and drink mimosa's. After that we came home to watch movies and attempt to let our food digest.

Tweet! Tweet! April 2011

I'm not sure if Twitter is going to keep all my tweets forever and ever. Because they are often little snippets about my very glamorous and exciting daily life (and aren't good enough stories to make a blog post) with my family, I will preserve them on this blog monthly. Behold! April 2011
